Since the Mandatory Soft Story Retrofit Program (MSSP) was implemented in 2013, many San Francisco building owners are required to seismically retrofit the soft story of their building due to the frequency of earthquakes. A soft story is a “weak” part of a structure such as a garage, where the wall is weakened by empty space. In San Francisco, it is required that any wood-framed soft story with two or more floors above it, be retrofitted.
